Eric Carr: The Fox
Eric Carr (born Paul Charles Caravello; July 12, 1950 – November 24, 1991) was an American musician and songwriter who served as the drummer for the rock band Kiss from 1980 to 1991, following the departure of original drummer Peter Criss. He was known for his energetic drumming style and distinct persona, "The Fox".
- Joining Kiss: After Peter Criss's departure, Carr was selected from hundreds of auditionees to become the new drummer of Kiss. He officially joined in June 1980.
- "The Fox" Persona: Carr initially adopted the persona of "The Hawk," but it was quickly changed to "The Fox." His makeup design featured a red fox face with a black heart around one eye.
- Musical Contributions: While primarily a drummer, Carr was also a talented multi-instrumentalist. He contributed songwriting and vocals to several Kiss albums, including co-writing the song "All Hell's Breakin' Loose" from the Creatures of the Night album, and sang lead vocals on "Little Caesar" from the Hot in the Shade album.
- Albums with Kiss: Carr played on eight Kiss studio albums: Music from "The Elder", Creatures of the Night, Lick It Up, Animalize, Asylum, Crazy Nights, Hot in the Shade, and Revenge (posthumously, with drum tracks recorded before his death).
- Illness and Death: Carr was diagnosed with heart cancer (specifically, a rare form called cardiac angiosarcoma) in early 1991. He underwent surgery and chemotherapy, but his health continued to decline. He passed away on November 24, 1991, the same day as Freddie Mercury's announcement of having AIDS.
- Legacy: Eric Carr is remembered as a talented and dedicated musician who brought a new energy to Kiss during a period of transition. His contributions to the band's sound and songwriting, as well as his charismatic stage presence, have made him a beloved figure among Kiss fans. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Kiss in 2014.
